Enjoy a night of jazz and cultural crossover with Wynton Marsalis and special guest Naseer Shamma: Fusing Traditions. The program is a celebration of Arabic music and the tradition of swing featuring new works by Marsalis, Shamma and other Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra members. Shamma is an Iraqi oud virtuoso, composer, educator and UNESCO Artist for Peace. Ahead of the performance, Seton Hawkins, director of public programs and education resources for Jazz at Lincoln Center, will lead a pre concert talk from 6:45 to 7:15 p.m. The program will take place in Orchestra Hall at the Symphony Center (220 S. Michigan Ave.). Ticket prices range from $75-$399.
🎶 Sat. Jan. 28, 7:30 – 10 p.m.
Ladama brings a night of Latin alternative music from around the Americas to the Lund Auditorium (7900 W. Division St.) at the Dominican University Performing Arts Center. Ladama is an ensemble of women who are “sisters in song, rhythm and spirit.” Harnessing music from their respective countries of origin, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and the United States, they utilize traditional and nontraditional instruments from across the Americas but with a modern twist to produce Latin alternative music. Ticket prices start at $28.
🐉 Sun. Jan. 29, 1 – 3 p.m.
Chicago’s Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade will feature traditional dragon and lion dancers, colorful floats, marching bands and marching groups. The parade route begins at 24th St. and Wentworth Ave. and travels north to Cermak Road. This event is free and open to the public.
